You Save One Life, You Save the World
An Offering for Rosh Hashanah 5768/2007

by Lili Artel

In Judaism we believe: if you save one life,

You save the world.

David Scott was riffling through the rubble

For the dead at Ground Zero.

He saw movement.

Life?

His two ears and tail burnt, his coat singed,

The squirrel scurried away from Scott;

Who names the 9-11 survivor Scat.

Scott left Scatt food every day.

In time the squirrel came to Scott,

Entered the cage.

Scott released Scat in Battery City Park.

Where he’s scaling tree trunks,

Scooting along tree limbs,

Foraging for food and defecating,

Dating and replicating…

Let’s not forget Scat’s ancestor

Enjoyed Eden with Adam, Scott’s ancestor.

With Scat saved, we’re saved too.
