Kehilla Community School is part of a Jewish Renewal congregation that seeks to create an environment where students are exposed to and participate in many aspects of Jewish community and tradition -- cultural, historical, spiritual, intellectual, social, and religious. We nurture students in developing their Jewish lives. Specifically, we teach Jewish skills such as Hebrew reading, prayers (both traditional and Renewal), Torah and stories, ways to celebrate Jewish holidays, and Jewish history. While hoping to transmit and foster our students’ connections to tradition, we also want to support each individual's personal "God Wrestling," or sense of developing beliefs, both spiritual and intellectual. To do this, we encourage students to explore sacred texts and ideas, to question, to develop trusting relationships with their teachers and classmates, and to share their own imaginations. The school is a reflection of the Kehilla community, which is composed of people from diverse backgrounds, affiliations, and experiences. We take a clear stand on our vision of peace and justice in the Middle East, affirming both a support for a Jewish homeland and for the Palestinians to create their own homeland.
Kehilla School offers many opportunities for Tikkun Olam (repairing the world) and Tzedaka (righteous acts of giving) both locally and in other parts of the world. Every month we take up a collection of goods to donate to local and national groups in need. The students get a sense of giving tangible goods to others—such as stuffed animals or shoes or toiletries. Yearly we celebrate a “Mitzvah Day” to give our hands to local gardens, shoreline clean ups, feeding the hungry, taking care of animals, and other local projects. We hope your family will join with us, creating community with Kehilla.
