Kehilla congregants recognize that Jewish community is in a state of continual evolution. Our households no longer follow exclusively traditional nuclear family models. Gender roles have evolved. Families are multi-cultural. Sexual preferences vary. Each person’s spiritual outlook is unique. Thus, Kehilla’s congregants have a variety of lifestyles, religious practices, theologies and atheologies. We relish the challenges posed by our diversity: creating communal and worship experiences that we can share together, using our diversity to enhance these experiences. Approximately 25% of Kehilla members are in interfaith and/or multi-ethnic relationships. About as many identify as lesbian, gay, transgender or queer. We are committed to being a safe and welcoming place for everyone in our community.
In July 2008, seven same-sex couples celebrated their marriage in our sanctuary. It was a moment of great joy for the couples and our community. In Kehilla, one way to develop friendships with other Kehilla members in similar life circumstances or who live nearby is through a havurah – a group of friends who meet regularly to share Jewish rituals. Most Kehilla havurot meet for Shabbat, or for Havdalah, the close of the Sabbath, while others meet for hiking, to do tikkun olam activities together, or for Sunday brunches. In addition, Kehilla sets aside the third Friday night of each month for havurot to meet for Shabbat dinner. The best way to get into a havurah is to attend a “Havurah Happening” – a Friday night event several times a year at Kehilla in which we play low-key matchmakers, seating people with similar interests together. We also use this time to teach Friday night table blessings, including modern interpretations of traditional prayers. Another way to get to know Kehilla members who live near you is to attend a neighborhood brunch. Kehilla members in different zip code areas are hosting Sunday brunches every few months. If you would like to be included in these brunches and haven't yet received an invitation, please contact Sasha@KehillaSynagogue.org Our Same Sex Wedding Fest, July 2008
